Is it possible to start mc with an alternate .ini file? Judging
by the man page, I suspect not, but I have to ask.
I found out with a simple experiment:
    $ mkdir mc-test # not strictly necessary but it helps
    $ HOME=$HOME/mc-test mc
What about creating a hard link in the .mc/ directory to the
required configuration file in same directory.
Name the hard-link 'ini' and point it mc-ini-whatever?

I tried this and it works. The only thing is when you edit and save the ini file in using mc itself, using the 'hard link' the following message appears:
┌────────────────── Warning ───────────────────┐
│ File has hard-links. Detach before saving? │
