Alternative to DW's Editable Region function

Is there an alternative to using Dreamweavers Template (.dwt) and editable 
reagion method of making site-wide upadtes? I am usig Server Side Includes for 
my Menus/Navigation areas, but what about for content areas? Im just wondering 
what I would do If I didnt have the luxury of DW's functions.

 My pages use the same basic page laout design eg masthead, menus, footer etc, 
but the Content areas of my pages have different layouts eg one page may use 
only one div, one page may use two-div column layout for its content, another 
may use three divs for its content etc etc. Just like each page of a news paper 
has differing content layout.

 So If I didnt have DW I couldnt use its Editable Region function, so what how 
would I go about performing updates site-wide?
