Thanks David,

So your use of ($a) for example was just a representation of a 
condition, not a real variable value?  OK, I get it.  Boy, when learning 
PHP, the first challenge is understanding the syntax, apparently the 
next will be understanding the meaning of shorthand expressions.  Like 
learning French to study German.
