I am avoiding thinking about how to do exactly what you have described below.
Perhaps you can help:
(Ideally):
The activation e-mail should (automatically) go to the email address
provided by the registrant, and "automatically "return a randomly
generated password. I think I can avoid thinking if i forget: "automatically".
Any clues, or better yet: A clear & free solutions

If you really wanted to make sure users enter a valid and in-use email, you
could have the user register, then send an activation email to the email they
supplied. This email would contain a dynamic link that they would click to
activate their account. They can only access your site if they have activated
their account. This would prove their email is valid and in-use. "
