You can probably clean the mask up a bit. Small stray pixels along the edge
usually get introduced when an 8bit shape with fuzzy edges gets converted to
1bit (particularly when using the diffusion dither option). Try using the 50%
threshold option when switching to 1 bit, sharpening edges before conversion
helps as well. When drawing your shape avoid feathering or antialiasing
selections since none of this will transfer to the mask. If you?re still not
happy with the mask you can use path selections with the eraser/pencil to touch
up any stray black or white spots in Photoshop. If practical, drawing a shape
in Illustrator, then importing to Photoshop will give you the cleanest possible
mask. If that?s not practical (say the mask shape must match something in a
photo), then silhouetting the shape using Photoshop?s path tools, and use the
paths to fill black inside, white outside will also give a cleaner mask than
converting the 8 (or 24) bit image to 1 bit.
