As you say, it's not really the Director design, though even .dcr only hides Lingo code, not assets. All it was ever designed to do. As to .swf, kind of a tough call - blame or credit? The fact that Macromedia published the .swf file spec may be a major factor contributing to the overwhelming success of the Flash player/plugin. http://www.macromedia.com/licensing/developer/fileformat/faq/ Once you open a filespec, it's rather difficult to make it secure.
