Believe it or not, the fix for me was, when selecting the Remote Directory 
(Folder that contains your web site), to remove the leading slash, in the 
wizard, so that, in my case:

 /httpdocs/
 was replaced with:
 httpdocs/

 And then, suddenly it worked.

 None of the other factors seemed to be relevant...
