 If you are also new to sql, I have heard good things about the book Teach 
Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes by Ben Forta.

 If you don't know what a normalized database is, and you are going to write 
your own databases, learning data modelling is the most important thing you can 
learn.  People have mentioned the book, Database Design for Mere Mortals.
