recordcount without query

I'm trying to find a way to know the record count of a whole table without 
querying it.

 I have a legacy DBF table with roughly 1,000,000 rows and a simple query is 
very time and resources intensive but I need to frequently know the number of 
records in it.

 Can this be done in CF?
