Advice on Secuirty

I was starting to make a login form and was wondering what's the best way to 
prevent people from getting into places they don't belong? Also I use to use 
the Application.cfm and heard that the stuff I used in there is totally 
different from the cfc version, what would I need to put in there to make it 
all work together?
