Check your services applet and make sure the ODBC services are running.  Then 
go to your Data Sources (ODBC) in the administrative tools section of your 
control panel, and create a system datasource using the Excel driver for your 
xls file.  Make sure the CF datasource uses that name, then try verifying it.
