isQuery - how to get rid of quotes?

I am doing an <cfif isQuery(attributes.query#variables.x#)>

 If I put quotes around the attributes stuff... it thinks its a string and 
tests as not query... when I take the quotes out it errors out at the #... what 
am I doing wrong?
