Yes PHP and ColdFusion can live on the same server just fine. In a basic scenario your php pages will be run by the PHP engine and your cfm pages will be run by the ColdFusion engine. There are no issues with one linking to the other.
The difficulties can arise when one wants to share session data between
the two. If you want|need a single login or other data to be shared it
will take some additional work. It can be done, but it will take effort
to pass the appropriate data back and forth. Web service maybe one way
to facilitate this.
There is a blog entry or two on how CF8 can potentially execute PHP
script directly. It is beyond my knowledge or skills and maybe more
theoretical and experimental, but maybe something to investigate.
