I'm not really qualified to answer this question, but let me throw this in just 
in case it helps.
 I recently had to write a query that pulled only the date and no time. My 
where clause is: WHERE startDate <= CONVERT(varchar(10), getdate(), 101)

 the 101 is a code that puts it in mm/dd/yy format - no time
 If I had used 108 it would have given me hh:mm:ss - no date

 I found this in the SQL help when I looked for CONVERT
