As the new owner of a Macbook pro I can't see ever buying a PC again.
This thing just plain works. And almost every day I find a new "hey cool"
function that shows how thoroughly Apple thinks through their OS and apps.
Then again, I've been happy with Suse on my desktop for the last couple of
weeks two, though I haven't replaced every app yet so I'm booting Windows
intermittently.
I would look into a previous generation Macbook or if you want new check
for old inventory at an Apple retailer. The new multi-touch MBPs just
came out so I hear that they're getting rid of the older units at a
discount.

So, no, clearly don't get the MacBookPro..
Ps. Until you mentioned your limited requirements, I'd have said
MacBookPro..
