Right. And there is never any doubt -- once you've become
accustomed to seeing several spaces with black -- where the
Point is. But sometimes the black extends from the Point
backwards, and sometimes it extends forwards, quite a few
spaces when it feels it has to cover the space from the beginning
of a line to the Tab setting.

Not at all. When I want to mark sections of text, that is done
with a blue shading. That works fine.

I think the terminal may be the problem. I am using
rxvt, BUT it is set so that it is Unicode capable. This is
possibly the difficulty. To be sure, I'll have to do some
work to reverse this setting. It has brought difficulties
in other areas, for instance while trying to run mutt when
I'm logged in to gwyn.tux.org.
