Not that I am particularly partisan in either side of this debate, but it's
worth pointing out that 1GB of web storage space on a well connected server
could prove useful to people who work at a number of different sites, in the
same way that people carry their favourite utilites around on a USB pen. Some
places the download speed will be fast, some slower, but it will be available
from any computer with a web browser. By contrast, hosting this sort of storage
at home would mean a maximum transfer rate of a couple hundred kilobits a
second on a normal ADSL line. I suspect that the GMail service has more
bandwidth than this available.

If it really winds you up this much, then don't bother :) I don't have a Gmail
account and don't plan on getting one. But other people are happy to use the
service because it meets the needs of their situation - we're all different
people with different needs, different skills and different amounts of free
time!
