m68k-elf-gcc -mcpu32 does not work

Hello,
I have built an m68k-elf version of gcc-4.1.1.

When I try to compile with it, it seems to want to use the native
assembler not
m68k-elf-as...so I get an error message that -mcpu32 does not work.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
