auto-mode-alist and vm-mode (failure to switch to Presentation buffer)

If I visit a VM folder folder.foo and then run vm-mode, then things
work as expected, leaving me in buffer "folder.foo Presentation".

But if I use auto-mode-alist to cause vm-mode to be run when a file
with suffix .foo is visited, then visiting folder.foo successfully
creates a presentation buffer "folder.foo Presentation", but fails to
switch to this new buffer.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?

(I'm running VM 8.0.8.)
