$HOSTTYPE

Hello,
How does bash determine $HOSTTYPE? Is it dependent on the version of bash installed - if I install i586 packages on an x86_64 platform, will $HOSTTYPE be i586? (I wouldn't've thought so, but I wanted to check.)
Thanks in advance for any help; and apologies if I'm missing somewhere I could easily find this out.
