Thanks Marti for the link and the information. One thing from the site that I
haven't come across before is the stripping of the membranes. I was stripped 3
times (3 weeks in a row - at 38, 39 and 39.5 weeks). She is going to the peds
first thing tomorrow morning at 9 am. She is now finally asleep after being up
for 12 hours, don't know how long it'll last though. I will definitly ask the
pediatrician to run some blood work. I tried calling the ped at the hospital
(naval hospital) I had her at to ask him some questions about her case but
since we moved and are no longer patients there they won't let me talk to him.
They said its against their policy ??? I do have all her medical records though.

Hi, Brandyn~
Grunting as if constipated is a symptom of GBS meningitis.
http://www.groupbstrepinternational.org/info_main.html . It's not common at
all, but it has happened that babies can have both early-onset GBS disease
(birth to 7days) and late-onset (8days to 6 months) although maybe Hayley's
symptoms are from something different.
Please don't hesitate to call the pediatrician and get her in ASAP (far
better than wishing you had.)
Keep us posted!

I still have soo many questions that I just don't understand. Like, what GBS
is exactly?? How I tested negative for it?? Did my UTI I had a month prior
have anything to do with it?? Was the infection in my uterine wall there
before or after delivery and did it have anything to do with it? Was my
pneumonia there before or after and did it have anything to do with it??
Could it all of been prevented if I was given antibiotics since my waters
had been broken prematurely (without labor) and were broken 22 hours before
delivery? Did the fact I pushed for 5 hours before the docs decided on
c-section have anythin to do with it?? She was marked at the end of delivery
as being high risk for sepsis due to my waters being broken for over 18
hours. They tested her at birth and at the 72 hour mark. She didn't test
positive until right after the 72 hour mark. At 48 hours after they started
her on antibiotics, she showed no growth.
Hayley is 2 months now and doing ok. About a month ago, she started to not
sleep at all. She will sleep for maybe 10 minutes at a time but would sleep
almost all night (waking up for feedings every 3 hours). Her stools were
very runny and ammonia smelling and grunting a lot (almost like she is
trying to pass a stool). While she was awake, she would cry inconsolably for
hours on end and prefer to be in a vertical position. She would scream
bloody murder anytime I tried to nurse her or change her diaper. The doctor
said she might have infant reflux (GERD) and a milk protein allergy. So, she
has been put on nutramigen and zantac. It worked great for a week, then
upped her dosage last week b/c she gained weight but jump to this week, its
like it all stopped working. Monday she was up from 3am until 7:30pm crying
and crying and lately, she has been grabbing her chest while she is crying
and will suck on a bottle but let up and cry -- route for food but then
pushing the bottle away
?? yesterday, she did great and slept a long time. Now, she has been up
since 2am, grunting like a tummy ache and just generally fussy. We have an
apt. with the pediatrician tomorrow. I don't know if this may be related to
her GBS or completely unrelated??? I'm a new mom so this is all new to me.

Brandyn-
You have come to a great place to share, learn and have people who
understand!
Our daughter Allison was born happy and healthy, but at 20 days contracted
GBS bacterial meningitis. I am not going to go into all of the details,
because my hands would hurt and I would bore those who have heard our story
20 times! (but fortunately, they would never complain!)
We have our story on a website to try and get the word out to others about
GBS. Unfortunately, GBS comes and goes in adults and just because they test
negative, it can creep up quickly. I was GBS positive and they still were
not on the ball about it. (this was almost 5 years ago...can you guys
believe it...Allison is almost 5!!!)
Our website is www.allisonhugs.org
I hope that things get better for you...how is your daughter doing today????
I am sure I speak for all of us here...welcome, and although we are sorry
you found us this way, we are glad you found us!
Warm Regards,
Robin Reid

My name is Brandyn, I am 25 years old, and I have 1 daughter born december
7th with GBS in her bloodstream.
On my due date, december 6th, my water broke at 6:45pm and I wasn't in
labor. They started me on pitocin and was pushing by 8:50am. By 3pm, my
daughter was not descending, so, we decided on a c-section. By 4pm, I was
wheeled into the O.R. and my daughter was born at 4:20pm.
About 2 days after delivery, my pulse was still 124 and I was getting a
fever. I had a uterine wall infection and pneumonia and put on IV
antibiotics. (About two weeks before I delivered, I started getting a sinus
infection and a month prior, I had a UTI.) The morning my daughter was going
to get discharged (i was still in the hospital), she too started spiking a
fever. They put her on antibiotics while waiting for test results. She had
GBS in her bloodstream.
I had tested negative for GBS 2 weeks prior. Not much was explained to me
and I'm still trying to fit all the pieces together. She was in the
hospital for a few days with IV antibiotics, then sent home with a picc line
(it clotted and they then put in a peripheral IV), it too clotted and they
ended up readmitting her. They were originially going to do 14 days of IV
antibiotics but because the IVs kept clotting, they sent her home on day 10.
She has been cleared of GBS. She also has GERD and a milk-protein allergy. I
am still having a temp anywhere between 99.1 and 101, headaches, pulse
around 100, sinus issues and chest pain. I think I may still have pneumonia.
Anyways, I am really looking to talk to other people who experienced GBS
with their babies. I just feel like I have soo many things that have been
unanswered and soo many pieces not put together yet.
