You will be receiving ballots for the 2008 AAUP national officer and
Council elections in about a month. Ballots will be mailed between
February 25 and March 3. You will be electing all national officers
(president, first vice president, second vice president and
secretary-treasurer) and one Council representative from your district.
You can learn about the 2008 election candidates by visiting the
<http://www.aaup.org/AAUP/about/officers/cand.htm>Association Web
site.<http://www.aaup.org/AAUP/about/officers/cand.htm> There you can read
a brief biography and election statement of each candidate. Printed
versions of candidate biographies and statements will also be included
with your mail ballot. Between now and the close of voting (April 15), you
may also be hearing from the candidates directly by either traditional
mail or email.
Under new election guidelines, all candidates for national office and for
Council seats have the opportunity to send two electioneering emails to
their constituents using the AAUP data base. A third-party vendor will
distribute these messages from a server housed outside the national office
of the AAUP. You will be able to receive election emails, but you will not
have access to the names or email addresses of other recipients nor will
they have access to yours. You will, however, be able to "hit reply" and
respond directly to the candidate. The AAUP national office will not edit
electioneering messages, and no responses will come to the AAUP national
office. The subject line for each message will read "AAUP Election Message
from (candidate)."
Choosing good leaders for the Association is always an important task, but
particularly so this year. The AAUP is in a time of transition: plans for
a fundamental restructuring of the Association are well along, and the
search for a new general secretary is proceeding according to
schedule. The Association's elected leadership will face a host of
challenges and opportunities. Please inform yourselves about the
candidates and be sure to vote when you get your mail ballot.
The AAUP Online is an electronic newsletter of the American Association of
University Professors. The mission of the AAUP is to advance academic
freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values
and standards for higher education , and to ensure higher education's
contribution to the common good. By joining, faculty members, academic
professionals, and graduate students help to shape the future of the
profession and proclaim their dedication to the education community. Visit
