Unfortunatley, adding -lz to the pdftex build causes a crash at runtime:

[1{/root/.texlive2008/texmf-var/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map}
!pdfTeX error: pdflatex: zlib: deflateInit() failed (error code -6)
 ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

Otherwise I would have been happy with the outcome. Perhaps you know a
way to temproarily add -lz for xetex(patch configure or something),
which we will not put back into the tl tree, just so that we can get
some working binaries for the DVD and port, then after release we can
work on using pkg-config?

What would you say to that?

Also we should take this off tech@ now.

Thanks for your help Matthieu!
