Puh, 8 years later it's hard to remember the details... ;-)

But: In the meantime 'gre' became an ifconfig-creatable interface and
     greconfig vanished, so my main concern (kernel panic via
     greconfig) is no longer present.

-> IMHO you can close the PR. At the moment and in the last years I

   do/did not use any gre interfaces. I'll speak up when running into
   gre problems again.
