Dear friends,
Please see announcement below.
All the best,
Vidar Ekehaug

*************************************
My name is Chikara Onda, and I will be serving as the new Editor-In-
Chief of
*Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development*. *Consilience*
is a
global, online journal based at Columbia University in the City of New
York,
dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary dialogue on sustainable
development, and is the first student-founded academic journal of its
kind.
I am pleased to announce that *Consilience* has released its second
issue,
which can be found at www.consiliencejournal.org . We are now accepting
articles for the third issue, due to be published in Fall 2009. *The new
deadline for submission for Issue III is June 30, 2009*.
*Consilience* publishes four categories of written work: *Scholarly
Articles, Opinion Pieces, Field Notes, and Photo Essays*. We also
welcome
submissions to the bi-weekly Editorial Column. I welcome you to visit
www.consiliencejournal.org to view our first and second issues.
Given your expressed interest in sustainable development, our Editorial
Board invites you and students that you may know, both undergraduate and
graduate, to contribute to *Consilience*. We have attached below our
Call
for Submissions, and I encourage you to forward and share this with your
colleagues, as well as current and past students.
*Scholarly Articles submitted for Issue III should address current
sustainable development policy and its effect on development. For this
issue, Consilience especially encourages pieces that address food or
water
security, sustainable urban transportation, epidemiology, and growth
of the
world?s largest cities.* Papers selected for publication undergo an
intensive peer review and editing process, and work previously written
for
classroom or individual use is welcome.
If you have any questions regarding the submissions process or
*Consilience*,
please do not hesitate to contact me at co2177@xxxxxxxxxxxx or the other
members of the Editorial Board at contact@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The
Editorial Board and I look forward to working closely with your
students and
reading their submissions.
With regards,

*Consilience: The Journal of Sustainable Development*, an
interdisciplinary
academic journal based at Columbia University, seeks submissions for its
Fall 2009 edition. Articles may take the following forms:
*Scholarly Articles*: Original, research-based articles that fall
between
1,500 and 5,000 words. Please include relevant graphs, data tables,
maps, or
any other supplementary material. In keeping with the theme for the
third
issue, *scholarly pieces should be centered around policy proposals*.
Pieces
should identify problems, critique policy, and provide alternative
policy
suggestions or solutions.
*Field Notes*: Fieldwork observations that make a broader commentary
on the
field of sustainable development. We encourage you to submit relevant
photographs along with the article.
*Photo Essay*: Photographic work that offers a unique view on a
particular
challenge, issue, region, or population related to the study of
sustainable
development. All photographs should include an explanatory paragraph
or two
and citations for each photo. Ideally, the photo essay will portray a
cohesive or thematic story regarding the material presented.
*Opinion Pieces*: Opinions concerning attendant challenges, strengths,
and
theories regarding sustainable development.
*Consilience* is also looking for 500-1500 word opinion pieces on any
issue
relating to sustainable development to be part of the bi-weekly
*Editorial
Column*. This is an opportunity to share your views with the larger
sustainable development community since your work will be published on
the
front page of our website! Anyone interested in writing or looking for
more
details should email opinion editor David Berke at djb2142@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
Please see important formatting and submission guidelines for
submission on
the website: www.consiliencejournal.org or e-mail
contact@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with any questions.
*All articles should propose concrete policy recommendations.* We ask
all
articles to:
- Communicate a current problem and comment on the challenges it
presents. This section should also address why the policies that
have been
proposed to solve this issue may or may not be effective.
- Present one or more case studies to address a specific policy that
concerns the challenges of sustainable development and affects *a
clearly
identified segment of the population, whether a local or
international
community.*
- Recommend alternative changes to legislation, or suggest new
opportunities for actor participation and policy implementation.
All articles should be academically rigorous, yet accessible to a
general
population interested in the field of sustainable development. Authors
should consider an interdisciplinary approach and promote further
research
and discussion about their chosen topic. For Issue III,
*Consilience*especially encourages the submission of articles on the
following topics:
- Food or water security
- Sustainable urban transportation
- Epidemiology
- The growth of the world?s largest cities
*DEADLINES*
*Final date for submission: June 30, 2009*

undergo an
intensive peer review and editing process, and work previously written
for
classroom or individual use is welcomed. Authors should set aside time
in
September to revise their work.*
Please send all articles for submissions to:
submissions@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
**Note to Authors:*
All articles should be the work of the authors, though writing done as
part
of previous class work is welcome. We encourage submissions from
authors who
have never previously been published in academic journals or for whom
English is not their first language.
