WHoever wrote in the last Digest "Often one can trace texts back to the middle
ages, but it's not as easy to verify the provenance of the extant melodies"
echoed exactly what I always say about Sephardic songs - people keep treating
them as "medieval" (with a fairly wide range of meaning attributed to the
term "medieval") but again, even when the words can be traced to the Middle
Ages or Renaissance,the tunes are a different story (and many of the words of
the best-known and most often-recorded Sephardic songs aren't allthat old
