After some more testing I discovered the problems are the same
on 2.6.5 with a somewhat older NVIDIA driver.
Moreover on 2.6.8 with the NV driver (the one packaged with XFree)
there are no problems. Perhaps the choppy sound was caused
by the NVIDIA driver occupying too much processor power on 2.6.8?
As I reported earlier, there is also no problem
on 2.4.27 with NVIDIA driver. 2.6.8 and NVIDIA seem to dislike each other.
But only under allegro and rarely under SDL.
Who's fault is it? NVIDIA's for being hungry?
2.6.8 for failing to keep the beast tied? Allegro's and SDL's
for not telling NVIDIA or kernel to limit framerates/redraws/whatever?
The individual games' for the same?
How can we move this bug to nvidia-glx? Or could we fork the bug?
Thank you for your support!
