Bug#274283: addition to apt-get man page

Subject: Bug#274283: addition to apt-get man page
From: Jeremy Brown
Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2004 15:46:02 -0400
Package: apt
Version: 0.5.27
Severity: wishlist

In the apt-get man page are the lines:

--purge
Use purge instead of remove for anything that would be removed. An asterisk ("*") will be displayed next to packages which are
scheduled to be purged. Configuration Item: APT::Get::Purge.

This description doesn't tell the user anything about what purging actually does. In addition, the remove section lines read:

remove remove is identical to install except that packages are removed instead of installed. If a plus sign is appended to the package name (with no intervening space), the identified package will be
             installed instead of removed.

This is also confusing, because remove is *not* the exact inverse of install unless "--purge" is specified.

I recommend a few new sentences be added in either or both of these places stating that "apt-get remove" won't (by default) remove configuration information, and that supplying the "--purge" flag will cause the entire package to be removed, along with configuration files.
