I've also had problems, but not to worry. There are certainly
workarounds. I can't speak Debian/Ubuntu to you about the workaround,
but I can tell you what I do on Fedora systems. I copy the kernel and
initrd files the installer needs to my /boot andput an appropriate entry
into grub. Works like a charm. As old as your box is, you may need
something like this.
