I don't believe my problem is a slow cpu or disk caching. Most of the time emacs just starts. Fast, clean, nice. But sometimes there is a delay of 30 to 60 seconds. I assume it is doing "something", but by the time time I start up a monitor to check cpu usage, it's running :) Any pointers on why this is happening and what to do to avoid.Typically such random occuring startup delay has to do with networks. Do you have anything in your “.emacs” that access remote disk or domain name? or perhaps a loading a ftp connection in your last desktop session? No, nothing like that which I can see. I've never done anything resembling ftp or remote access in emacs. And, an earlier suggestion to use strace will not work either since this is a random thing. I'm really wondering if it could be a "cleanup" operation of one of the cache files or something. But, I find it hard to believe that this would take 30 to 60 seconds .... I do have all my backups going into a single dir (/home/bob/.backups) and it appears to maintain about 500 files ... could that be it? ☄ |
