Port 587 works fine here. Blunt question: did you tell gnus to reload
its init file (press 'r' in group buffer)? Gnus remembers *a lot*,
sometimes I even have to restart Emacs to start afresh.

Not to my knowledge, but:
C-h f smtpmail-send-it C-x o TAB RET C-u C-M-x to follow what
`smtpmail-send-it' does. Same for other functions. C-M-x again on that
function to quit the debugger. See (info "(elisp)debugging").
