My personal experience for AOE 3: running it on Athlon64 3200+ Venice, 1 GB
dual-channel PC2700 RAM with PCI-E 256 Mb GeForce 6800 video card, at
1280x1024 resolution with all possible quality options set to maximum.
The game is definitely playable, however, a bit sluggish perfomance may be
noticed for a very short times when there are large armies on the screen. So
basically its ok, its maximum available perfomance, just not always.
I would suggest GeForce 6800 GT or better video card (instead of just 6800)
for that game if you want to achieve even more comfortable playtime. Sorry,
can't advise about ATI cards (because I personally don't like them). Talking
about CPU and RAM, I don't think you would buy something worse that
A64-3200+ CPU (which is about equal to latest pentiums running at 4+ Ghz)
and less that 1 Gb of RAM. Also, I would recommend against any worse
videocard if you really want to enjoy the game.
For rise of rome, I don't know anything except that its system requirements
are much much lower.
P.S. Personally, I don't like AOE3. Mostly because the game has lost the
good old AOE flavour, that's one reason. Another is because it is heavily
underbalanced and still has NO RANDOM MAPS - even now when 4 patches have
been released. Basically, you will end up playing the same and same rush
games on the same 20 maps that the game has...and hope that another one map
will be added with the new patch. Ensemble Studios (the developers) do not
seem to be actually listening to what people say on the forums, and just
delete the posts asking "why the game is missing many features that are
de-facto must have for any strategy game today?"
