My friend's laptop will only go to Stand By or Hibernate. Is there a

I Googled and could find nothing.
TIA.
On my laptop (Compaq Presario C706nr) those settings are in Control
Panel - Power Options. The default setting was Hibeernate, but I'm
not a fan of that, so I disab;ed Hibernate, which had the added
advantage of being able to ditch C:\hiberfil.sys. The options I have
now are Do nothing, Sleep and Shut down. On battery, I selected Sleep
(which is Vista's equivalent to Standby) and when hooked to power, do
nothing (actually the screen turns off.)
If the laptop is XP or earlier, you can disable hibernation through
the control panel applet. In Vista, you have to use command line in
"Run as Administrator" eith the following command:
powercfg -h off
See if you have the option to shut down after hibernate is disabled.
Thanks Ron, but I've disabled Hibernation on that computer as you
described and for the same reasons as you did (see? We do think alike.)
Unfortunately, this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/powermgmt.mspx
shows an accurate portrayal of the options my friend has on his computer
for what happens when the lid is shut. The illustration is a little more
than half way down, or:
www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033/windowsxp/images/using/setup/maintain/67422-advanced-tab.gif">http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033/windowsxp/images/using/setup/maintain/67422-advanced-tab.gif
As you can see, the option to completely shut down is strangely missing.
Thanks, Microsoft. Once again you've missed the mark on guessing what
and end user wants.
Part of the problem my friend is having is that his computer is
experiencing the problem described at this site:
forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/130637-preparing-stand.html">http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/130637-preparing-stand.html
by a guy named Jim Wulf. I.e., Stand By and Hibernate simply don't work
properly. My friend agrees with his wife that neither is an option he
really wants anyway, he'd rather have the computer simply shut down when
the lid is closed. The power light is still visible and you would be
able to see when it went off that the computer was completely shut off.
So..., what I'm looking for is a program to add an option to "Shut down"
to the dropdown shown at the link above.
