I think slashdot.org is not nice solution to host it. IRC channel
on irc.freenode.net would be much better answer. I'm willing to chat
but I just cannot do it. I never used slashdot.org nor I see some
chat opportunity there.
I think the interface was disappointing - but the barrier to
participating is potentially easier than people getting an IRC
client and joining a channel. I believe the Slashdot folks are
looking into improving the user interface in future.
We may think about putting on regular IRC chat sessions in future to
talk about OpenSolaris.
Also bear in mind that be able to target an audience who may not be
familiar with OpenSolaris is definitely a benefit - slashdot.org gets
a lot of traffic, and a good target audience for OpenSolaris.
