Anyone interested in forming a committee or group of Educators for Social Justice should look at the models of two different groups I am a member of:
One is Teachers Against Prejudice (www.teachersagainstprejudice.org)
TAP's mission is to increase awareness of prejudice and discrimination and examine its causes and roots; open dialogue with and between students and educators from elementary school through college; and promote understanding and respect for all through the critical exploration and analysis of films, television, and other media.
TAP works on all issues of discrimination whether based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or body image.
TESOL has an interest section called TESOLers for Social Responsibility. This group used to be a caucus of TESOL members and now has recently become an interest section. The following statement comes from their webpage www.tesol.org Communities/Interest Sections/Social responsibility:
The Social Responsibility IS comprises TESOL members who are actively engaged in integrating language teaching with social responsibility, world citizenship, and an awareness of global issues such as peace, human rights, and the environment. The IS aims to promote social responsibility within the TESOL profession and to advance social equity, respect for differences, and multicultural understanding through education.
Membership in TAP is open. Membership in the Social Responsibility IS of TESOL is limited to people who are members of TESOL. I think these could be models for any adult educator interested in Social Justice issues.
