Why not Transitional XHTML? Personally I like the "clean" look of having
every tag closed. Others prefer HTML. Either works fine.

Hotspot? What? There is no hotspot there... and nothing visible in IE,

I have read four... but I am sure other studies / reviews have had different
conclusions.
As far as the font and color choice, your "yuck" is hardly descriptive...
other than to show your own personal dislike.

I might switch to a different font sizing metric to correct that - I knew it
existed in IE 6 but was surprised to see now it was in IE 7 still. I
thought they had fixed that. Reasonable thing to note as a weakness,
especially since many of my clients are older and might not have good
vision.
