Yep, that did it. The manual doesn't make it clear that you have to
manually select a wash type by turning the dial -- I was trying to add
a dry cycle with an automatic wash setting, which doesn't work.
So here's a quick text file I wrote for my future reference, and which
I'll put here for future posterity thanks to Google's archiving:
WD-1435RD WASHER/DRYER GUIDE TO DRYING

Pressing Power and then Start/Pause will do an automatic wash
with no option to dry -- this is fine for a quick wash with no
intention of drying. But if you need to dry, then follow the
appropriate steps below.
WASH AND DRY:
(1) Press Power.
(2) The round wash dial lights up, so select your wash type.
(3) Now press Dry to tell the machine to Dry after washing.
(4) Press Start/Pause to start the washing + drying process.
DRY ONLY:
(1) Press Power.
(2) Press Dry.
(3) Press Start/Pause.
