(I assume Dell INspiron 600m's come with an XP CD. If not borrow one from
someone)
Boot from the XP CD and choose 'R' for the recovery console.
Read the instructions, and take the appropriate action to log onto the
recovery console.
Console in this case is 'DOS Box' like black screen that you type commands
into, no mouse, icons, pointers etc.
The usual sequence is
1 don't touch the keyboard till it's loaded the default keyboard language
2 select the number of your operating system (usually 1 for xp), press enter
3 press enter at the administrators password prompt 'unless' you have an
administrators password (few people have)
then type: chkdsk /r and press the enter key.
At the end of the chkdsk:
Check to see if there are any bad sectors reported, if so start looking out
your disaster recovery plan and backups.
If all appears well type exit and press enter.
Remove the CD and if all is well it will boot to XP.
Cheers
Paul.
