One of the computers at my house has gotten so slow and balky that it's
impossible to use, and I am going to reinstall Win XP Home, but I'd like an
opinion: to format or not to format?
I've uninstalled every program that was on the drive, and gone in from the
command prompt to clean out all the loose files that the uninstallers didn't
get (except the DLLs, which Windows won't let me delete), but still the
machine moves like a slug. I've run several spyware tools as well as
HijackThis, and can't find any obvious poisons, so I figure the problem lies
in a corrupted or overstuffed Registry ... maybe. The question is, if I do
a "Clean Install" of windows, will it completely delete the old Registry, or
does it simply overwrite original files and entries, and leave all the
trash?
Secondly, can I boot from the WinXP CD and run the "Format C: /u" command
from there? How? Will it show up as an option on the Welcome screen?
~TIA, Rusty
