Yeah, MS didn't have it's own way back then.   Word was up against Ami 
Pro, Wordperfect, and a few other minor players.   Excel was battling 
Lotus 123 and Quattro Pro, and dBase ruled the database world.

There were a few good office programs out there too.   Ability Plus, was 
pretty good as was Clarisworks.  If Clarisworks had a decent relational 
database it would have killed everything else I believe.   It was 
blisteringly fast and was truly an integrated product, rather than the 
separate products loosely bundled together like most of the other 
"Office" suites.
