Your only option is to get the product key from the kid. If it was in the
registry, Office would not be asking for it.
Technically, you should be having a legitimate copy. If you did, you should
have the original installation disk and the product key.
Have you tried Open Office from Sun Microsystems? This one is excellent,
and in some ways it is better than the office program you are trying to use.
It does everything Office does, and more. It can also export and import over
90% of the formats that Office can handle.
As for the spell corrector for OE, you can find some very good free ones on
the net, or buy one on the net for a few dollars.

I bought this computer from a kid across the way. Well, since he had
completely bollixed up XP, I had to use the system recovery option to
reinstall XP and get it working again.
When I go to MS Office, it wants the Product Key. Office was installed on
the thing from the factory - I thought using the system recovery kept all
registered programs in working order?
Of course, I don't have it, and have no way of getting it. Is it possibly
still stored in the registry? If so, how would I find it?
BTW, it's a Compaq.
