A)
Rules for buying a used computer (your thread title was RATHER
misleading)

1. Make sure it looks reasonably clean and un-abused to begin
with.
2. Make sure they will let you spend 1-2 hours running various
tests of your choice. AT the VERY least I do a total HD surface
scan to make sure the HD is OK. I bought a used Compaq mini with
a 40GB HD and after about an hour it said "factory specs - like
new".
3. Assume there is NOTHING on the drive, even if there is an XP
sticker or whatever in it (there was on mine - not that I would
run XP if you paid me).
4. Format the drive (even more than once for good measure) and
then get started.

B) Had you done any of that, you would have known that a) there
is no password (and why should there be? the O.O. (or the store)
should have wiped the disk to begin with, he's certainly not
gonna provide the password!) AND if HE OR the store DIDN'T wipe
the drive, they're suspect of stupidity or laziness or both. Or
did you get it at 2 AM from the back of a truck in a WalMart
parking lot?

D) Attempting to run XP on a machine with 128 Ram is not wise.
You need 512. Even more is better. The machine I bought has
256MB RAM, an XP licence sticker, yet had nothing on the
"perfect" (Maxtor!) HD.
I put 98 SE Lite on it and it runs like a charm.

D) Notwithstanding some of the other posters solutions' may
work, I would still format and star fresh.
Live and learn. (Not necessarily from ME or even other posters
here, but YKWIM).
